To understand why membership in Sb1 is special compared with the banking relationships you may have had before,  it helps to understand all the ways we are different - from how we started, to our philosophy and our approach to serving your financial needs.

History

Sb1 Federal Credit Union was originally founded in 1977 by employees of the SmithKline Corporation.  Unsatisfied with the banking services available to them at the time, our founders chartered a new kind of institution with the goal of finding a better way to serve their own needs and the needs of their coworkers.

Over the past three decades Sb1 has evolved into a full-service, member-oriented financial institution servicing dozens of primarily science-based companies across the country.

Our Philosophy
To achieve our mission, we must continually aim higher every day and to provide the best possible "Banking Experience" for our members.

Our Mission
The purpose of Sb1 Federal Credit Union is to provide quality financial services, diverse products, information, and convenience that exceeds members' expectations while maintaining financial viability.

Our Strategy
Sb1's strategy is to take care of our stakeholders, provide superior service, develop a strong brand, and remain profitable.

The management team at Sb1 recognizes the importance of articulating a specific strategy over the next few years based on market conditions and consumer trends as well as the capabilities of Sb1.   Sb1's strategy involves an emphasis on four specific areas that we believe are essential to our success and the benefit of our membership:  caring for stakeholders, service, brand, and profitability.

Each segment of our strategy is detailed below:

Take Care of Our Stakeholders
There are three Stakeholders in Sb1--the Members, the Staff, and the Institution itself. This portion of our strategy will require that we pay attention to both Members and Staff. We must move staff to become "advisors" as opposed to "filling orders". Members will benefit if we keep their best interest as our priority. Implementation of a Sales & Service culture over the next 3-4 years will benefit all Stakeholders as well as support other segments of our strategy.

Provide Superior Service
Continual focus on great service to distinguish Sb1 from other financial institutions.

Develop a Strong Brand
Review our current brand and revise, as needed, to strengthen our market position and reputation.

Remain Profitable
Our target return on assets is 80 to 100 basis points. We must focus on both sales (income) and expenses, as well as growth to achieve our goal.

Our Service Promise
1. We understand that accuracy in transactions and information is expected by our members.
2. We follow-up on requests and return calls/e-mails quickly.
3. We work to resolve problems with a "can do" solution based attitude.
4. We treat members and co-workers with respect.
5. We actively listen.
6. We do something "extra."
7. We keep our promises.

Sb1 in the Community
Sb1 is a committed member of the communities that we serve. Through the years, your Credit Union has been a proud participant in several of the following initiatives.

  • Help Us Save Lives, Donate A Phone!
Sb1 supports the "Donate a Phone" and "Call to Protect" campaigns.  Each of our Credit Union offices is a drop off location for any hand-carried cellular or PCS phone that you no longer need.  These phones are often a lifeline in an emergency, providing victims with instant access to help. Through the years Sb1 has donated thousands of phones to benefit this cause.

Please join our team in helping us support this lifesaving work and give those in need the chance to break free from domestic violence. These victims deserve a better and brighter future.  Email hr@sb1fcu.org
for more information. You can also visit the website at www.donateaphone.com for additional information.

  • Daffodil Days
Each spring Sb1 sells daffodils to members and employees to raise funds for the American Cancer Society to help their fight against cancer.

The money that is raised is used to support groundbreaking cancer research, provide up-to-date cancer information and education, advocate for public health policies that benefit the community, and provide services that improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
